Everything. RED's world-class sensor development program made several huge breakthroughs, allowing resolution performance and read-reset times thought to be virtually impossible when EPIC was originally conceived. It became immediately obvious that by developing EPIC as a modular, component-based, building block concept, that the company's ethos of Obsolescence Obsolete could be taken to a higher plain, offering a product that could be upgraded indefinitely by simply switching out the sensor/electronics package, while keeping all of the peripheral parts of the camera intact. Announced on November 13th, 2008, the NEW EPIC concept revolutionized camera design. Modularity would be the key, with all modules interchangeable and compatible with all current and future camera body designs. Instead of a single 5K camera body with integrated I/O and power/finder solutions, EPIC would become four individual bodies, or "Brains", ranging from 5K to 28K, and almost infinitely configurable.

EPIC's four models include EPIC S35 5K PRO CINEMA, EPIC FF35 6K PRO CINEMA, EPIC 645 9K PRO and EPIC 617 28K PRO.

The original RED ONE, anchor of the RED Digital Cinema Camera Co., is a 4K camera, meaning that the horizontal resolution of the sensor is over 4000 pixels. EPIC S35 is a 5K camera, providing over 5000 horizontal pixels, EPIC FF35 is a 6K camera, providing 6000 horizontal pixels, EPIC 645 is a 9K camera that provides over 9000 horizontal pixels and the phenomenal EPIC 617, a 28K camera, offers a mind-numbing 28,000 pixel horizontal resolution. In comparison, an HD video camera offers 1920 horizontal pixels. EPIC S35 offers 6 times the resolution of HD, EPIC FF35 offers 10 times the resolution of HD, EPIC 645, over 30 times and EPIC 617, well over 100 times the resolution of HD.

EPIC S35 5K uses a 13.8MP sensor, EPIC FF35 6K uses a 24MP sensor, EPIC 645 9K uses a 65MP sensor and EPIC 617 28K uses a 261MP sensor.

RED's concept of DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera) carries over from its Scarlet program into EPIC, in that any EPIC camera can be used as a world-class still camera, offering from 13.8MP to 261MP still frame resolution, but it is the extraordinary frame rate abilities of EPIC that define it as a PRO CINEMA camera. Shooting a 5K digital cinema camera at up to 100fps, at full 5K resolution, is a dream come true for the feature film maker, but imagine the breakthrough for IMAX quality 9K resolution at up to 50fps or full 6 x 17 cm. ultra wide at up to 30fps, a format that competitors get excited about 1fps. EPIC, in all its forms, set the standard for what digital cinema will be in the future.

EPIC S35 5K offers a sensor that maintains a Super 35 film size, capable of being fully compatible with all standard PL cinema lenses, including both zoom and Prime designs. Resolution of the sensor allows a full 5K cine resolution or a 13.8MP frame. EPIC S35 uses the next generation Mysterium-X sensor technology, developed from knowledge gained in the development of RED ONE's Mysterium sensor. EPIC FF35 6K uses a larger full frame 35mm film sized sensor, measuring 24 x 36 mm, allowing the use of 35 mm still camera lenses with a 1:1 focal length ratio. PL mount lenses, designed for a smaller coverage area can still be used when shooting at 5K or less resolution on the windowed sensor, but for full coverage, RED will provide interchangeable lens mounts for Nikon, Canon and custom RED-Designed 35 mm Electronic lenses. The still frame resolution of EPIC FF35 is 6000 x 4000 pixels, or 24MP. EPIC FF35 will be the first generation of RED camera to employ Monstro, sensor technology advancing even beyond Mysterium-X.

In examining the two families, Scarlet and EPIC, it is apparent that there is crossover on the S35 and FF35 sensors. The Scarlet versions of these sensors are designed to handle a wide variety of cine applications and will likely become the most commonly used cameras for independent film making, music videos, commercials and anywhere an HD video camera might have been considered. Frame rates allow up to 30fps, with brief bursts for slow motion effect. At lower resolutions, higher frame rates are available for further options. Still performance at 13.8 and 24MP, respectively, will target Scarlet DSMC S35 and FF35 as the "go to" camera when both stills and motion are required. Conversely, EPIC versions of S35 and FF35 are all about frame rate and data rate. Hand machined, versus cast, bodies will be designed for day in/ day out professional on-set use, while the larger, more robust bodies, will have additional electronics and cooling systems that will allow the incredible frame rates of EPIC. At 5K and 6K, respectively, EPIC will be able to run at 100 fps! At 2K, EPIC FF35 will be able to run at an amazing 350fps. Remarkably, and the great ...

It is a question that we have heard more than we could ever have imagined. It's funny, because it makes us realize that we don't think conventionally. The whole philosophy of RED is to stay at the very cutting edge of technology and the only way to do that is to stay ahead of it. We are developing technology now for applications that haven't even been thought of yet. We have been in conversation with like-minded forward thinkers that are already developing plans for our cameras, in configurations and scenarios that will boggle the mind. Digital medium format, 65 megapixel, at 50 frames per second. Do you think the cover of Sports Illustrated will ever be the same? Digital Stereo IMAX....... in slow motion. If you can't imagine it, you will be very entertained by it.

From the very beginning, the inspiration behind this company was to be the best camera company in the world. Yes, that meant making some extraordinary cameras, but it also meant treating our customers the way we, as customers, always wanted to be treated by the companies we bought cameras from. It seemed that no matter how loyal we were, how zealous we were about our brand, the company itself never seemed to particularly care. We would run out and buy the latest model only to have it rendered an eBay relic the following year. Well, we wanted to be different. It started with the idea that instead of doling out technology a little bit at a time, over the years, we would make everything we could do available today. And we would bend over backwards to try and make progress something that we could share, making upgrades available to our customers, instead of making them buy new cameras. So, with our very first product, the RED ONE, we have made 18 separate firmware upgrades available to our customers, at no charge, that have literally provided them 18 new cameras over the year. Our next sensor technology, Mysterium-X, providing improved dynamic ...

The EPIC X upgrade program is open to all RED ONE owners, present and future. There is no cut off date set for the upgrade program.

The period of time that a RED ONE owner may upgrade is indefinite. There will likely be some point where the offer is withdrawn, but it will be far enough into the future that any owner that is considering the switch will have had plenty of time to take advantage of the upgrade.

The retail cost of an EPIC S35 Brain is $28K. EPIC X is a limited edition version of the EPIC S35, housed in unique Titanium colored side panels and packaged with 3 key additional modules, the RED Battery module, the RED Media Module and the RED I/O Module. The package price of the EPIC X and all three modules is $28K, the same as a standard EPIC S35. The RED ONE owner, present and future, is exclusive in their ability to participate in the program and has two options towards upgrading to EPIC X. One, is to trade in his/her RED ONE, receive a one-time $17.5K credit, and pay an additional $10.5K and receive an EPIC X. The other option is to keep ownership of one's RED ONE and pay $28K for the EPIC X package. In either case, the serial number is noted as an "Executed" upgrade transaction.

The order of eligibility for RED ONE owners to trade up to EPIC X is based, in order, on the delivery date of the RED ONE. Production numbers will be targeted to fulfilling the demand in a relatively short period of time, so the wait will not be a long one.

Yes, the Mysterium-X upgrade does not preclude upgrading to an EPIC camera at a later date.

A RED ONE owner can upgrade to any EPIC camera; EPIC X, EPIC S35, EPIC FF35, EPIC 645 or EPIC 617. The upgrade is a one for one program and the serial number is marked as "Executed" upon completion of upgrade.

The RED ONE customer may purchase as many EPICs, at full price, as they want.

With Epic, the customer can upgrade indefinitely, due to the modular concept upon which it is based. EPIC X uses the EPIC S35 Brain. Surrounding that brain and forming the camera are the REDmote control interface, RED Battery Module or REDhandle, RED I/O Module, Finders, LCDs, RED Mounts and a collection of peripheral support gear that comprise a working camera. This modular system allows the user to remove just the brain and replace it with future sensor/electronics packages, without having to give up all of the supporting accessories. The cost of the new brains will rest on the customer, so that RED can stay in business and continue building industry leading cameras. The offer to RED ONE owners of a full credit towards EPIC is a promise made to support the philosophy of "Obsolescence Obsolete" and is a one-time opportunity. It is given because of our commitment to our customer for his or her loyalty, and because our vision of a modular upgradability with EPIC could not evolve based on the RED ONE form factor.

All RED EVFs, RED LCDs, RED Brick batteries and RED Chargers, PL mount lenses and external RED RAID and RED Flash Drives are compatible between the current and future systems.
