RED and The Berrics Congratulate REDirect Winners
July 22nd, 2014

After months of hard work and dedication, REDirect—a competition to showcase the work of some of the most renowned skateboarding cinematographers in the world—has come to a close.

On Monday, RED Digital Cinema and The Berrics held an invite-only event at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood to celebrate the contestants and their work. Following the 4K screenings of each cinematic short, all shot on RED EPIC, the winners of REDirect were announced and presented with their prizes.

Russell Houghten took home the Grand Prize for his eerie exploration of an abandoned Los Angeles titled Urban Isolation. Combining empty LA streets and freeways with some opportunistic skating, Russell produced his ghostly homage to a city constantly on the move. While shooting for his project Russell explained that his inspiration was LA's traffic—his biggest complaint since moving to the area. Since LA's roads are rarely free of cars and trucks, shooting the production required a combination of clever timing and RED's post-production capabilities to bring his vision to life.

Russell was awarded a full RED EPIC kit consisting of an EPIC MYSTERIUM-X specially engraved with The Berrics and REDirect to commemorate the contest, a DSMC Ti Canon Mount, a RED Touch 5.0" LCD, a DSMC 1.8" SSD Side Module, and all of the support accessories needed to complete a rig—along with an Adobe Creative Cloud Membership.

Kyle Camarillo earned second place for his project, Gold and Grey, going home with a Freefly MoVI stabilization unit and an Adobe Creative Cloud Membership. Jason Hernandez's untitled three-minute short rounded out the top three projects, earning him an Adobe Creative Cloud Membership as well.

RED is extremely proud to have worked along alongside The Berrics as well as all the shooters and skaters on the 2014 REDirect Skate competition. Visit the REDirect page to see all the projects, along with special Behind the Scenes cuts.
