It's a great exercise for some of you just starting out working with R3D files to open the Raw files in Redcine-X as well as your chosen finishing tool to try match how we graded to the M-X Reel ( you can download the Reel on RED.com to compare ) .. or to try and do something completely different.

Thanks again to LightIron who did the finishing on the Reel and all the great filmmakers who took time out of their schedules to shoot this footage.

1st off... we would like to congratulate Arri for having the courage to step up and develop this camera. Good on them.

We had expected the images to be very similar and it appears that this test confirms that. Both cameras, the Alexa and an M-X RED ONE, will improve from here as both companies get a handle on what we/they have and do some "tuning". While we wished EPIC was used in this test... it wasn't quite ready in time.

We have believed, since IBC last year, that these two platforms would be the ones standing for the future. We are very proud to be in such good company. But for the moment, we tip our hats to Arri.

2. If you are using a RED LCD... make sure you get the brightness correct. Click it up to brightest, then click back down 4 clicks.

BTW... in the next build we will move FLUT to a "Pro menu"... again... don't do that!

While this info is also posted in "Tips and Thoughts"... I felt like it should also be posted here for feedback.

Our goal was to make a camera that was easy to shoot, easy to post and made incredible images. After a couple of years of working very hard on all of these categories, we think we are now pretty close to having the easiest/best solutions in the industry.

Thoughts?

Jim

Shooting a RED camera.

1. Set up your camera
Load latest firmware
Do a Black Shade Calibration (lens cap on, T22)
Format media (CF card, RED RAM, etc.)

2. Set up your project.
Select a project size like 4K 2:1, 4K 16:9, 4K Quad HD, 4.5K 2.33:1, 3K 2:1, etc.
Select a project frame rate base like 23.976 (default), 24 or 25.
Select an in-camera color space like REDcolor (default) or RAW (we HIGHLY recommend REDcolor)

3. Set ISO/ASA and exposure
Set camera White Balance (or better yet, shoot a MacBeth, grey card or other white reference in the scene and set WB in post).
Use your light meter
Use the camera exposure tools
• Check your histogram.
• Stay inside the "goal posts"- Noise floor (left) and clipping (right) in RAW with Build 30
• Check "RAW Check"- Noise floor (purple) and clipping (red) in RAW with Build 30.
• Check "barber pole"- RAW with Build 30.
• Check "stop lights"- RAW with Build 30.
• Use False Color

RECORD.

GRADING RED footage...

1st Choice. White Balance and grade native R3Ds in a system that supports the R3D SDK like Scratch, Pablo, Baselight, REDCINE-X, FCP, Color, Adobe CS4, Vegas, etc.

2nd Choice. After selecting the correct White Balance, output full range (REDlog or REDgamma) and full res debayer to DPX, TIFF or ProRes 444 from REDCINE-X/RED Rocket. Open output in 3rd party grading applications.

So what are RED ONEs actually worth?

My opinion…

Prototypes Boris and Natasha- Priceless. 1st RED ONEs to shoot footage, 1st project was Peter Jackson's "Crossing the Line" 2007. Current location- the Vault.

Any named prototypes, like the ones used to shoot Ché. $300K.

#1- Priceless. Sits in original box and has never been opened since the day it was packaged. It is the ultimate time capsule. Current location- the Vault.

$6- $200K. "Elvis", 1st camera delivered outside RED. Not exactly sure why it would be worth less than a new Sony F35, but not sure why that camera sells for so much. Current location- OffHollywood.
#7- $200K. "Bond"… you know, 007. Current location- OffHollywood.

#31- $175K. The single RED ONE that has shot absolutely the most projects. This camera will be famous. Already is actually. Current location- Dino.

Serial number under 100- $40K. These will be collector's items and a huge part of history.

Your thoughts?

Well... even we were lulled to sleep with conventional thinking. It was the industry's perception (before RED) that the most measured resolution you could get from a Bayer Patter sensor was 75%. We showed that with Graeme's magic, you could get 80%. We believed for the past 2 years that was the theoretical limit.

We were wrong. What new techniques in the new sensor, new OLPF, new debayering technology, better compression and a wicked sharp RED Pro Prime... that "limit" has been blow by.

Here is a test of the new M-X sensor shot 4K 16:9 at REDCODE 42 with a 100mm RPP. It shows that 4K now yields 3.5K measured resolution (as compared to 3.2K in old tests). We also will show (as soon as I post the next chart) that 4.5K from the same sensor and lens yields a true 4.1K measured resolution.

I guess the "RED doesn't really deliver 4K" is old news.
