We have abandoned the RED Mattebox program.

Due to the increase of capable 3rd party solutions, we see no reason to continue development of this product category. With Arri's new lineup, at more reasonable pricing, the Petroff system, Red Rock Micro, Chrosziel, Vocas and others providing solutions from top to bottom at all price points, it makes more sense for us to concentrate on camera and lens development.

Build 16 is a monumental change to everything RED as far as the image quality, DSP and methodology is concerned. You may be surprised at how different it is from previous builds in how it looks and works. You will have to alter your thinking just a bit. What you see on the monitor and how you make exposure decisions will change. All for the better, but it will be a change.

We all wish we had done this from the beginning, but you have to walk before you run.

We just don't want anyone to be shocked when you fire it up.

Alpha build is just around the corner. Depending on the feedback we get from those chosen few, the Beta build should not be long after.

Exciting times.

Now, back to solving production problems... ugh.

I think it is only fair to speak clearly about our current situation... which is not good.

1. We had taken payment from customers the past month as production ramped up and we anticipated that most of our production problems were solved.

2. At NAB, a very large number of reservation holders, that had previously passed on taking their cameras, stepped up ready to go.

3. At the same time, we had an issue with a supplier. That put us back. And we had collected money from customers and have kept them waiting while we quickly dig out of this hole. We applaud our customer's patience (for the most part) through this.

4. Today, we had more bad news. Upon inspection of the newest batch of sensors... we have a significant number of rejects for bad cover glass. Just when we thought nothing more could go wrong... it did. We are scrambling to speed up sensor production and fix the cover glass issue, but we will NOT ever send out cameras with sensor issues of any kind.

5. So here we are. Customers sent money in for their cameras on our request. While we fully believed we would ship their cameras, we are now in a bad place. I am prepared to refund the money to every customer until we catch up and have their camera in hand and boxed for shipment. We have not stopped production, but the current cover glass issue has severally (and temporarily) slowed production at the worst possible time.

We will contact all those that have paid in full to see if they prefer to have the money in their possession until this drama ends.

We established an open policy early in the game. Now is not the time to change that. We tell the good news and the bad news. It is what it is.

We are listening carefully to your comments and suggestions and will do whatever we can that is in the best interests of our customers.

As with every obstacle that has come before us... we will get past it. The only damage to this program has come in the form of "time lost". I wish we could make the time up... we are trying.

Houston, we have a problem.

There were many reservation holders that hadn't taken delivery of their RED ONE cameras. At NAB we got a huge number that decided (all of a sudden) to take them. Since we are obligated to deliver when a reservation holder "is ready" it has put us in a delivery bind. We had not expected such a rush of older reservation holders.

What it means is that many, who have just sent in their payment, have to wait a bit until we catch up. This is painful. We say a camera is ready, someone sends us the money, then they have to wait. We don't like this anymore than you do. Please be patient as we will catch up quickly. If this is unacceptable to you, we will gladly refund your payment until we can ship.

Brent and Kelly are trying their best to sift through this issue and we expect that this is a momentary blip on the screen because of NAB...

Just in case it wasn't clear... all RED ONE owners have 1st crack a getting an Epic when it is released. All RED ONE owners will be given the opportunity to get an Epic by trading in their RED ONE (at full $17,500 value). You can trade in your RED ONE, keep your RED ONE and buy an Epic, or pass altogether... in the order RED ONEs were shipped. We believe in taking care of the ones the believed in our program from the beginning.

Panavision has released a set of videos entitled "Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications". I have to say that, while the science is mostly correct, the spin is absolutely wrong. Video #6 is particularly "interesting". I guess we have made Canon a bit nervous also?

Are they actually saying that a DSLR image is not as good as a grab from the Genesis? We, at RED, find this video pretty incredible...
We have had many top DPs call us and shake their heads on the phone... :-)

OK. Thanks for the two week break. I needed it.

Now... please be respectful here in the RED house. We do listen carefully, just don't make us come kick your ass.

1. Please don't ask for any new features until AFTER we deliver Build 16. We just don't have the bandwidth until we finish this.

2. Build 16 has been completely rebuilt three times. This is an incredibly difficult trick we are pulling off. Much more difficult and complicated than we thought. We have all our horses on it. Graeme is even at RED working his ass off along with Rob, Deanan, Matt B., Bimal, Andy, Melissa, Stuart, Jarred and myself to make sure we get it right. RED Alert! and Redcine have to be rebuilt completely when we are done so they work with 15 (and before) and 16 (forward). This is a LOT harder than we thought (did I already say that?).

3. The 18-85mm zoom is nearing production. The more we test it, the more we like it. It is a "no excuse" Professional lens.

4. The primes are moving along. We'll post comparative charts with the best cine primes out there soon. They, too, will be "no excuse" lenses.

5. Please remember that we are 2 years, 4 months old. Sometimes I think you forget.

6. PC support is very high on our list and we expect that full support will be announced in June. Finally.

7. We appreciate the support from those that attended NAB. It was 100% good. Those that didn't go to NAB tended to get a bit lost. Not exactly sure why. I guess I'd ask you to defer to those that were there... saw the footage, asked the questions, saw the product and left happy.

I won't be able to respond on a daily basis for awhile... hope you understand.

My best,

While I certainly appreciate all the support from our customers and respectful critics, I feel the need to step back and attend to more personal matters.

In my absence, Jarred, Stuart, Deanan, Rob, Brent, Kelly, Greame, Big Jon and Ted will attempt to answer your questions and keep you abreast of RED news.

I hope the Moderators can help this forum remain a place for respectful postings. I also think the Moderators might need some help from the serious posters to minimize the new wave of noise that has hit this forum.

RED customers can always contact me directly.
My best to all.

You have been warned. If you don't like hype, STOP HERE.

I am testing Build 16 and I am so happy. While there are lots of little nits to pick at this stage, the concept of what is being done here is absolutely incredible. I find myself shaking my head in disbelief while sitting alone looking at this stuff. I'm sure there is medication for this condition. When I find out what it is, I'll post it. You'll need it.

Build 16 will get lost at NAB. You will hardly notice. The other eye candy will over-shadow this build. But it truly is monumental. It represents our graduation from the University of Camera Building. I'm sure that there is a ton more for us to learn, but the foundation is now laid for the RED future. Two years ago we knew nothing. I really can't believe that so many of you trusted us with our shiny prototype! :-)
