RED Shows off KOMODO 6K In A Virtual Production Setting at HPA Tech Retreat 2022
May 16th, 2022

With the quickly evolving landscape of virtual production, camera owners and operators can benefit from having a varied understanding of the solutions at their disposal for the many challenges they will face. RED, along with some partners, took these challenges head-on at the 2022 HPA Tech Retreat by showing off how the KOMODO 6K (and new V-RAPTOR 8K VV) can help productions identify and overcome the challenges of virtual product with camera side solutions. RED partnered with Disguise, Planar, Mo-Sys, Brompton, Optitrack, and Unreal at the event in Ranch Mirage, California to display how a virtual / mixed-reality integration can come together to create a real-time and fully realized world right there in the middle of a conference room.

Some of the features that allow KOMODO to provide such a unique solution for virtual production and mixed reality include it's 6K S35 global shutter sensor, which includes a sensor sync shift functionality as well as IP-based remote control viewing and live-feed. The most unique feature in this setting though, was KOMODOs compact form-factor. It was the only camera on site at the tech retreat in which attendees could operate hand-held -- walking around to explore the virtual environment, experimenting with different angles, lighting, and more.

"RED was a fantastic technology partner to work with at this year's HPA Tech Retreat. As we both share a mission to democratize virtual production and make it accessible at any scale, it was great to demonstrate a lightweight, tracked, handheld camera setup that seamlessly integrates within a Virtual Production pipeline. Their flexible color science meant we were able to dial in a myriad of different looks on the fly and the KOMODO's global shutter prevented any venetian blinds effect. Pulling stills from the RED Control app was a great way to quickly share imagery in real-time for immediate feedback regarding the scene dynamics" Dan Baum, Disguise
