Shading your V-RAPTOR or KOMODO with RCP Pro

The Skaarhoj RCP Pro allows V-RAPTOR or KOMODO to integrate in traditional broadcast live production workflows. With this integration, you can control the parameters you know from the Komodo's web interface, including color control parameters, white balance, shutter speed, audio settings and more. If the lens connects electrically to the RED Komodo camera, RCP Pro can control iris, zoom and focus directly via the camera. Other lenses will require parallel control via analog or serial signals and RCP Pro supports this seamlessly via Blue Pill Extension cables. Recording to local media can be toggled remotely from the RCP. Most workflows will prefer a single RCP per camera, but RCP Pro natively supports up to 8 cameras in the built-in camera selector.

Benefits

· V-RAPTOR & Komodo enabled for broadcast workflows
· Shade RED Komodo in live productions
· Start and Stop recording remotely
· Multiple lens workflows
· Multi camera control

Example Configurations and Alternatives

· RED KOMODO - Default configuration
· KOMODO + Fujinon Digital - Fujinon Lens control via RS-232 and Skaarhoj Blue Pill

Technical Notes

The camera can be accessed via Wifi or with cabled ethernet connectivity (optional RED accessory). SKAARHOJ always recommends cabled Workflows. RCP Pro has a 1G Ethernet port with PoE enabled for a single cable connection. Alternatively to PoE, you can power RCP Pro with 12V DC. RCP Pro consumes up to 5W.

Any SKAARHOJ controller can control RED Komodo and V-Raptor when combined with Blue Pill. These are particularly relevant:

· RCPv2 - SKAARHOJs main stream RCP supports the same configuration via Blue Pill.
· Color Fly Multicamera Control - control multiple cameras directly with motorized faders
· Color Fly Stereoscopic Control - specialty configuration for control of 8 rigged pairs (16 cameras) of stereoscopic capture with RED Komodo.

One Cable SMPTE Fiber Workflows MultiDyne Silverback V and SKAARHOJ RCP PRO

Now productions aiming to use KOMODO or V-RAPTOR to bring cinema quality to multi-camera productions won't have to miss out on the convenience of one-cable SMPTE fiber workflows. With MultiDyne SilverBack V the ethernet control from SKAARHOJ RCP Pro can plug right into the Komodo's extension accessory. SilverBack V not only transports the bi-directional 1G ethernet and video data, it also facilitates a few legacy serial ports. This can be used to control modern digital lenses like Fujinon's Cabrio series. RCP Pro is flexible so that it can work with lenses either through the RED Komodo or like in this case in an entirely parallel process directly to the lens. In both cases, the operator's experience will be one and the same, integrated control of camera and lens without any distinction. Although the solution is composed of multiple parts, it's surprisingly compact, clean in cabling and seamless to manage for the operators.

Benefits

· SMPTE Fiber workflow with full lens and color control
· Control digital PL mount lens from RCP Pro
· Shade V-RAPTOR or KOMODO color from RCP Pro
· Integrated workflow
· Compact composite solution

Example Configurations

· RED KOMODO + Fujinon Digital - Fujinon Lens control via RS-232 and Skaarhoj Blue Pill

Lens Control Detail

The lens control applied in this solution is based on connecting the Hirose-20 connector of the lens directly to one of the RS-232 ports on the SilverBack V. The lens power (12V) and a bias voltage on a particular pin has to be enabled (to enable digital control). Regardless of the digital remote control, zoom and focus commands behind the camera can still be used. In the remote end at the Base Station, the RS-232 connection is attached to a Serial-Ethernet converter which in turn is connected to the network. The base station and RCP is likewise connected to the network. If the switch has PoE power, the RCP Pro needs only that one cable. With this setup, the RCP Pro can connect to both the lens and the camera over IP and deliver a seamless experience of the control to the user.

Multi-camera control

Connecting the KOMODO or V-RAPTOR with Skaarhoj Color Fly allows for full control of iris and the ability to match colors on multiple RED cameras simultaneously. Color Fly is a compact multi-camera control panel, that when added in a workflow with the Blue Pill or Reactor you can easily manage multiple pages of cameras with instant access. It also becomes easy to add or rearrange cameras within a web interface. Lens control can either be through the camera with compatible lenses or via external lenses from Fujinon.

Benefits

· Using one or mixing multiple RED Komodo and V-Raptors in Live Production
· Compact multi-camera control panel
· Individual camera features respected in control
· Easily add and rearrange cameras
· Lens control internal or external
· Color presets allows users to instantly store and recall settings

Setting Up Camera Profiles

Based on the generic Color Fly configuration you can select RED KOMOD or RED V-RAPTOR as your camera profile (Std. Class) when adding cameras.

Technical Notes

The cameras can be accessed via Wifi or with cabled ethernet connectivity. Cabled workflows are recommended when possible. Color Fly works through the Blue Pill to control the cameras. Long distance control from Europe to USA has been tested successfully for remote studios.

RED KOMODO & 3D Live Capture

Bring the 16-bit cinematic imagery of KOMODO to your 3D live productions. Matching colors and controlling iris on multiple cameras simultaneously, and even in parallel in pairs. This application is specifically developed for up to 8 pairs of cameras and allows users to change in and out of 3D mode while controlling the cameras in pairs or individually.

Benefits

· Komodo in 3D live production
· Adjust lens and parameters in parallel for mutliple sets of two cameras
· Control any supported camera setting
· Toggle between single and paired mode
· Up to 8 sets supported in configuration

Example Configurations

This is a very special configuration that can be applied to a Color Fly system. Labeled as “RED KOMODO 3D”

Technical Notes

The camera can be accessed via Wifi or with cabled ethernet connectivity. Cabled workflow is recommended if possible. Note that capturing 3D imagery with the KOMODO requires special lenses. Contact RED Sales or Support for guidance on the complete workflow. Color Fly works through the Blue Pill to control the cameras. The pairs of cameras must be set up with Device IDs from 1-16 in sets like 1+2, 3+4, 5+6, etc.
