The Hollywood Reporter explores the use of 3D in The Great Gatsby and other films in a new article. Director Baz Luhrmann reportedly made the decision to shoot in 3D after seeing a screening of Hitchcock's Dial 'M' For Murder in its original 3D version.

"It wasn't things coming at me that was interesting to me -- what was interesting was to see Grace Kelly just moving around in a room in 3D," Luhrmann said more recently. "I mean, I just wanted to reach out and touch her. And the camera's not moving, she's just moving and acting. So, it struck me how much 3D is like the theatre, how powerful it is in 3D when an actor moves toward the camera as opposed to moving the camera toward an actor."

In the Huffington Post, Luhrmann is quoted describing how the drama of the movie would play in 3D:

"The noise, the razzle dazzle, it's in the book. But [the whole novel] strips down to five people in a room going, 'You loved him? But I thought you loved me.' It's absolutely pure, simple five-handed drama. And I thought, seeing actors at top click in 3D, just acting, what would that be like?"

Shot on RED EPICs with 3ality Technica 3D rigs, The Great Gatsby took in $51 million at the box office in its opening weekend.
