December 20th, 2024

American Society of Cinematographer’s distinguished series Clubhouse Conversations offers an inside look at the art and craft of cinematography, featuring in-depth discussions with some of the most visionary filmmakers of our time. In this episode, renowned DP Stéphane Fontaine, AFC, joins cinematographer Ellen Kuras, ASC, to delve into his work on Conclave, a gripping political thriller set in Vatican City.

Fontaine reveals how he and director Edward Berger crafted the film’s distinctive visual language, using light and shadow to underscore themes of power, secrecy, and betrayal. “There is the epic side of the storytelling,” he notes, “and a focus on how intimate it could be as well... The intimate side called for some darker moments.” Their collaboration, along with the contributions of the production design team, was pivotal in creating a rich, textured aesthetic that immerses viewers in the intrigue of the Vatican.

Fontaine also highlights his use of the RED V‑RAPTOR camera, praising its ability to “reach into the darkness” with remarkable clarity. “The V‑RAPTOR is a very good camera and sees in the dark so much better than myself,” he remarks, underscoring how its capabilities and carefully chosen lenses allowed him to balance the film’s intimate character moments with its grand, cinematic scale.

The episode showcases how Fontaine’s imagery deepens the tension and depth of the story’s mystery and intrigue.
