Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home MTV Video Music Awards for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Cinematography for their epic video Can't Hold Us. The video was shot on RED EPICs and SCARLETs around the world and has more than 113 million views on YouTube. RED spoke with Ryan Lewis in April about his experience with the SCARLET and video directing as an independent artist.
"Investing in a RED setup first and foremost made music videos feel much more like films. The aesthetic of an SLR within music videos is now very common to a viewers eye. It's a particular look that works for some video concepts but wasn't satisfying some of the more extensive videos I wanted to make..."
With that recognition from the music video industry, the investment clearly paid off -- and then some. Ryan Lewis wasn't exaggerating about those "more extensive" music videos he wanted to make. Both Can't Hold Us and its successor Same Love top seven minutes in length. Same Love won the VMA for Best Video With a Social Message.
RED congratulates music video visionaries Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on their wins and looks forward to their next project.
