We returned from San Diego Comic Con Sunday afternoon exhausted with bags full of swag and with the unmistakable impression that though RED did not have a site of its own at the largest popular arts convention in the world, our presence was indeed felt.
Dredd, shot on RED in 3D, kicked off the Con with a free screening on Wednesday night (Preview Night). Dredd, which started production in 2010 before the release of the RED EPIC, was shot on the RED ONE MX.
The Hobbit movies, being shot on a seemingly ever-increasing number of EPICs, had a huge presence at Comic Con. The Hobbit panel itself was an enormous hit. Jackson showed off 12 minutes of footage from the movies stoking the flames of anticipation for his latest epic journey to Middle Earth.
In addition to the Hobbit movies' presentation at Comic Con, Weta -- Peter Jackson's effects team workshop -- had their own booth on the exhibit floor showing off some enormous trolls. Warner Brothers' booth advertised The Hobbit with 3D posters. LEGO showed off new Hobbit toys. Guardians of Middle Earth, a video game based on the Lord of the Rings universe, had their own tent outside promoting the game by allowing anyone to test drive it. (And they gave away some sweet Gandalf hats to boot!) It was impossible to ignore The Hobbit at Con.
Elysium, the new movie from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, commanded its audience with powerful previews of its futuristic dystopia. District 9 was one of the first movies shot on the RED ONE. Blomkamp shot Elysium on EPIC.
The newest of the Resident Evil movie franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution, was shot on EPICs in 3D. (We covered this last October.) Their panel at Comic Con turned into The Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez Show and hinted at a future end of the series.
Shot on EPIC, the reboot of Total Recall grabbed our attention at the Sony booth with the movie's robots, a futuristic hover car, as well as the Con's um... most unique... booth babe.
We also chatted with Geek Magazine who has relaunched their magazine with a cover story on The Amazing Spider-Man which was shot on EPIC in 3D. (Read some background on that here.) They also have a great interview with Noomi Rapace -- Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus -- in the issue. Geek was on-hand at Comic Con giving away t-shirts and copies of the new issue.
Probably the biggest reason we all make the pilgrimage to Comic Con every year is to experience the popular culture we love face to face. It's an exciting experience to see all the fantastic and various creative works being done with RED cameras in the flesh. It's especially humbling to see the masses of fans who react to all this incredible work. Here's to another great year of our favorites shot on RED.
